About Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure in which a diseased or damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant. The procedure involves removing the damaged femoral head and acetabular cartilage and replacing them with a metal stem, femoral head (ceramic or metal), and acetabular cup. THR is highly effective for hip arthritis, fracture sequelae, and avascular necrosis — delivering significant pain relief, restored mobility, and improved quality of life.

Severe hip pain radiating to the groin, thigh, or buttock — worsened by walking
Hip stiffness — difficulty putting on socks, shoes, or climbing stairs
Limping due to hip pain or leg length discrepancy
Reduced walking distance due to hip pain
Groin or thigh pain at rest and at night
Failure of conservative treatment including medications, injections, and physiotherapy

Challenges And Treatments

Challenges Encountered

Accurate cup positioning is critical — our surgeons use anatomical landmarks and image guidance for optimal acetabular component placement
Significant deformity or previous hip surgery increases complexity — managed by our experienced joint replacement surgeons with extended pre-operative planning
Prevention of dislocation post-operatively — addressed through optimal component positioning and early physiotherapy-guided precautions

Treatment Methods

Posterior or anterolateral approach — selected based on patient anatomy and surgeon preference
Cemented or cementless fixation based on bone quality and patient age
Ceramic-on-ceramic, ceramic-on-polyethylene, or metal-on-polyethylene bearing surfaces
Computer-assisted cup placement for optimal acetabular positioning

Surgical Procedure

Under spinal or general anaesthesia, an incision is made over the hip. The diseased femoral head is removed and the acetabulum is reamed to accept the prosthetic cup. The femoral canal is prepared and the prosthetic stem is inserted. Trial components are used to assess leg length and hip stability before final fixation with the selected bearing surface. The wound is closed in layers and a drain placed for 24 hours. Surgery takes 2–3 hours

Permanent elimination of hip arthritis pain — sustained for 20+ years with modern implants
Walking with support by day 1 — progressive independence over 6–8 weeks
Restoration of leg length equality and normal gait pattern
Return to walking, driving, and most daily activities within 6–10 weeks
