About Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus using minimally invasive keyhole techniques. It is performed for a variety of gynaecological conditions and offers significant advantages over traditional open (abdominal) hysterectomy — including smaller incisions, less blood loss, reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery, and a much shorter hospital stay. Our gynaecology team performs both Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) and Laparoscopic-Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) depending on the clinical indication.

Persistent heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding not responding to medical treatment
Severe pelvic pain due to fibroids or endometriosis
Uterine prolapse causing discomfort and urinary symptoms
Abnormal uterine bleeding resistant to hormonal or medical management
Pelvic pressure, bloating, and bulk symptoms from large fibroids
Confirmed or suspected gynaecological malignancy requiring surgery

Challenges And Treatments

Challenges Encountered

Large uterus size may increase technical complexity — managed with advanced laparoscopic instrumentation and morcellation techniques
Dense adhesions from previous surgery or endometriosis — careful adhesiolysis by our experienced gynaecological surgeons
Urological complications (bladder, ureter) — prevented by meticulous dissection and ureteric identification during the procedure

Treatment Methods

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) — fully laparoscopic removal with vaginal specimen extraction
Laparoscopic-Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) — combined laparoscopic and vaginal approach
Subtotal Laparoscopic Hysterectomy — uterine body removal preserving the cervix when appropriate
Concurrent laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy when ovarian removal is indicated

Surgical Procedure

Under general anaesthesia, 3–4 small port incisions are made. A laparoscope provides visualisation while specialised instruments are used to carefully ligate the uterine blood supply, divide the uterine ligaments, and free the uterus. The specimen is then removed through the vagina. For patients with ovarian pathology, concurrent salpingo-oophorectomy may be performed at the same time. The procedure typically takes 2–3 hours depending on the complexity.

Permanent resolution of heavy bleeding, fibroids, or pelvic pain
Discharge within 2–3 days — significantly shorter than open hysterectomy
Minimal post-operative pain with oral analgesia in most patients
Return to normal daily activities within 2–3 weeks of surgery
