About Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to repair hernias — abnormal protrusions of tissue or organs through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Using small incisions and a camera (laparoscope), our surgeons repair the defect with precision, significantly reducing recovery time and post-operative pain compared to open surgery.

A visible bulge or swelling in the groin, abdomen, or near the belly button
Dull aching pain or discomfort at the site of the bulge
Pain that worsens when coughing, bending, or lifting
A feeling of weakness or pressure in the groin
Heaviness or dragging sensation in the lower abdomen
In severe cases — sudden severe pain, nausea, and inability to push the bulge back (strangulated hernia — emergency)

Challenges And Treatments

Challenges Encountered

Risk of recurrence if mesh is not placed correctly — our surgeons use precision mesh placement techniques to eliminate this risk
Increased complexity in patients with large or recurrent hernias — managed with careful pre-operative planning and advanced laparoscopic equipment
Higher risk in patients with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions — thorough pre-operative anaesthetic assessment is conducted for all patients

Treatment Methods

Laparoscopic hernia repair — small incisions with camera-guided surgical mesh placement
Totally Extraperitoneal (TEP) approach — mesh placed outside the peritoneum for best outcomes
Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) approach — selected for complex or recurrent cases

Surgical Procedure

During laparoscopic hernia repair, 3–4 small incisions (5–10 mm) are made near the hernia site. A laparoscope (camera) is inserted through one incision to provide visual guidance, while surgical instruments are inserted through the others to repair the hernia. A lightweight surgical mesh is typically placed over the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall and prevent recurrence. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 1–2 hours.

Significantly less post-operative pain compared to open hernia repair
Small, barely visible scars — superior cosmetic outcome
Most patients mobile and discharged within 24 hours of surgery
Return to desk work within 1–2 weeks and full activity by 4 weeks
